If your business is under $3 million in revenue, read this

I was standing at the airline check-in counter, my luggage strewn open, trying to pull out what I could wear on the plane so that I could get my luggage under 50 pounds.

I walked onto the plane several hours later, a shambolic crime against fashion, wearing two sweaters, three scarves, and sneakers hanging off my purse. A bath towel poked out of my carry on.

I looked more like someone who had shoplifted at TJ Maxx and was trying to surreptitiously wearing it all out of the store.

If you’ve never been this person, then I bet you’ve seen this person at the airport.

We try to bring everything with us, and it just weighs us down and makes us look a little bit loony and disheveled.

The same goes for your business. Allow me to explain.

I want you to think of your business concept as a plane on the runway trying to take off.

As small businesses under $3 million in revenue, we’re still flying light aircraft (you need to put in a few more hours and experience to be ready to fly a 777!!).

And inside the plane we get to put our target market and our business services.

But you don’t have tons of space. So you need to be selective about who comes along.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably heard me say that we don’t need the whole pie to be successful - you don't need to serve everyone -- you just need the perfect slice of business.

Getting selective about your perfect slice of business, and getting out of being everything to everyone, is the only way your plane will be light enough to achieve liftoff.

If your business is struggling to find clients and gain traction, it’s most likely because your plane is being weighed down by too many target markets and too many service offerings.

You will never liftoff this way.

The good news is that once you lighten your load, pick your perfect target market and get really clear on your service offerings, you could be soaring!

The narrower we go, the more our opportunities grow.
