I was attacked by the Girl Scout Cookie Militia
I was involved in an altercation last week that involved my friend Blake, four boxes of Thin Mints, and a gaggle of gay men.
Blake happens to be my Girl Scout Cookie dealer.
I was meeting him at our local gay bar to collect my four boxes of Thin Mints.
I strolled in promptly at five, my eyes fixed on the plastic bag sitting on the bar counter with my beloved Thin Mints inside.
Before I had a chance to sit down, the three gay guys sitting across from Blake saw me and exclaimed, "Oh THIS is the woman who's getting the Thin Mints?!"
Their eyes murderous, they shouted,
"HOW COME YOU DON'T HAVE ANY SAMOAS!"
"THIN MINTS TASTE LIKE STALE PEPPERMINT PATTIES!!"
(I'd also like the record to show that they were NOT playing. I've truly never been involved in a more bizarre altercation regarding a cookie.)
I wish I could tell you I was making this up, but I have several witnesses who heard my impassioned defense of the glory of the Thin Mint.
After what felt like several minutes, the Girl Scout Cookie Militia calmed down and we broke bread over a pack thin mints (which, I might add, they gobbled up).
In a world that's already so divided, I had hoped that Girl Scout cookies could serve as the great unifier.
But some people will always find a reason to dislike us!
Even if it's over a freaking cookie!!!
In business, there are people who are going to love us, and people that, no matter what, are going to be unhappy.
The good news is that we can eliminate the nightmare clients and work with only people we love.
Designing a red velvet rope policy - who gets into your "club" and who doesn't - is one of the first things I tackle with my clients.
There are clues that nightmare clients will betray from the first time we meet them.
Knowing what to look for will free you from having to work with your own "cookie monsters".
Often we're scared to turn away a client because we aren't sure where the next one will come from.
So we continue to work with people who drain us, on projects we hate, and our business can feel like a total slog.
But there is a better way.
