How to solve the puzzle of getting booked solid. You need this…
"Then travel as Sisyphus purposefully did till you spot a place where Clark Kent would stop to undergo some changes."
We looked at the clue baffled.
Me and three friends spent the last two hours running through the streets of San Francisco as part of the Annual Chinese New Year Treasure Hunt.
The Chinese New Year's parade wizzed around us, dragons dancing up the street, colorful garments adorning the parade groups and lanterns lighting their path as the sun began to dim on the city.
We eventually plodded our way up the hill (feeling very much like we'd also been given's Sisyphus's fate) to find a phone booth where the next clue lay in wait.
I love puzzles, but that treasure hunt was one of the hardest I've ever done. Despite being among a team of puzzle lovers (we are a special bunch) we gave up before long. The clues were just too cryptic for us.
I'd long forgotten about the treasure hunt of a dozen years ago, until I was at dinner last weekend with my fellow San Francisco expats, James and Stephen.
"We came in 3rd place one year, " James beamed.
"Out of 200 teams?!" my jaw dropped to the floor. "Those clues were impossible!"
James smiled back at me.
"They were very tricky, but you had to know the mind of the clue writer. He was an old time San Franciscan. He'd been writing those clues for 30 years and if you knew understood his way of mapping out SF, you could win."
James was practically a native of San Francisco... his inside knowledge gave him a huge advantage.
