How I built a $100,000 consulting business in 6 weeks
"I'm okay with being an aspirational purchase."
I heard this earlier this week from my colleague Kathryn as we discussed why we don't water down our prices.
I felt the same way as a 12 year old, going to Flute World with my mom and staring through the glass case at the Yamaha open-hole flute I dreamed of.
I had to earn the right to afford that flute through consistent and diligent practice.
Eventually I did get that flute, and it's what helped me pass the auditions that got me into Interlochen.
Client relationships are no different.
Clients need to be ready to work with us.
They need to be ready to invest in themselves, be at a certain stage in their business and see the value before hiring you.
Don't sell to people before they're ready to buy.
But as consultants, if some of our dream clients aren't yet ready to work with us, what do we do if we need to make money NOW? I'd like to share how I built my consulting business to $100,000 in six weeks.
1) Got really clear on what I offered and who I wanted to work with
2) Put up a website that communicated my message and included credibility markers
3) Told literally everyone I know
4) Began soliciting introductions to people looking for help
5) Spent 80% of my time on business development setting up meetings (many went nowhere)
6) Sent interested parties to my website to check me out
7) Developed pricing models that were no brainers for the client and booked business
8) Did a good job
9) Clients kept me on
10) Clients referred me around
That’s it. That’s the secret.
No social media blasting. No newsletter. Just human to human relationship building.
Today most of my clients come to me with help figuring out #1, #2, #5 and #7.
